New Potatoes with Garlic and Spring Onions

32604003106_ccca5c70e5_k

These baked new potatoes are delicious served alongside some simple grilled fish with a large seasonal green salad.

Ingredients:

  • 500g new potatoes, halved
  • 1 whole bulb of garlic, separated into cloves
  • 3 Spring onions, chopped
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 125g tub coconut yogurt
  • Handful of chopped fresh herbs (choose from mint, parsley, dill or a mixture)

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C.
  2. Place the potatoes in a large roasting tray.
  3. Keep one of the garlic cloves for the yogurt sauce, scatter the others over the potatoes along with the chopped Spring onions.
  4. Drizzle everything with olive oil and toss to coat with the oil.
  5. Place in the preheated oven and cook for 60 minutes until the potatoes are turning golden.
  6. Meanwhile make the yogurt sauce. Crush the reserved garlic clove and add to the coconut yogurt along with the chopped fresh herbs. Season with a little salt and pepper and stir thoroughly. Place into a serving dish and drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil.
  7. When the potatoes are cooked, serve with the yogurt sauce alongside.

Rhubarb Crumble

Ingredients:

  • 8 stalks rhubarb
  • 1 Bramley cooking apple
  • 1-2 tbsp. honey
  • 100g tiger nut flour or green banana flour
  • 50g Medjool dates
  • 50g coconut oil
  • Optional: handful of flaked almonds

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C.
  2. In a food processor blitz the flour with the dates and coconut oil until you have a crumbly mixture. If it seems too dry add a little more coconut oil.
  3. Peel, core and chop the apple. Chop the rhubarb into 1 inch pieces, discarding the leaves. Place the apple and rhubarb into a pan with a little bit of water to stop it sticking and cook until the fruit softens and starts to break down.
  4. Place the fruit into the bottom of an ovenproof dish and drizzle over 1-2 tbsp. of honey to sweeten the fruit.
  5. Top the fruit with the crumble topping. If using, sprinkle over the flaked almonds.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the fruit begins to bubble at the sides and the top is golden.
  7. Serve with whipped coconut cream.

Grass-Fed Meat Supplier of the Month – Peelham Farm

I’ve written a longer post about UK grass-fed meat suppliers previously. Eating grass-fed meat and supporting grass-based farming is something I am passionate about so I am going to highlight one of these fantastic suppliers of high-quality British meat each month.

Here’s what Peelham Farm have to say about their meat:

Meat Manifesto

OUR MEAT MANIFESTO IS YOUR GUARANTEE FOR MEAT QUALITY, ANIMAL WELFARE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CARE

Our meat is good, clean and fair:

  1. It is GOOD because our free-range farming (grass reared cattle and sheep, free-range pigs), allows our animals to follow their natural foraging and grazing characteristics.
  2. It is CLEAN because it is an extensive grass-based system which has both landscape and biodiversity benefits and a light carbon-foot print.
  3. It is FAIR because it is slow and our young livestock are growing and maturing naturally as part of a naturally grass-grazing and foraging herd.

  • Our cattle, sheep and rare-breed pigs are home-reared
  • Our livestock are free-range and able to follow their natural behavior
  • Free from GMOs
  • Free from growth-promoters
  • Free from antibiotic supplemented feed
  • Grass-fed cattle and sheep
  • Naturally foraging and free-ranging pigs
  • Slow to grow
  • Slow to mature
  • We care for and respect our animals
  • We enjoy and benefit from our contact with them
  • We love our animals
  • We love their meat

Peelham Farm sell a fantastic range of gluten-free sausages and burgers as well as authentic British charcuterie which is completely organic – something that is difficult to get hold of here in the UK.

Eating Out – Paleo-Friendly Restaurants

There is still a lack of easy paleo-friendly places to eat in the UK. If you live or work in London you have more choice than most. I recently came across Pod which is available to order through Deliveroo and UberEats.

Pod have a really nice selection of eggs for breakfast (skip the toast) and a good selection of salad bowls for lunch.

If you know of any good paleo-friendly restaurants in your area, let us know in the comments below!

My Favourite Paleo Products

I start every morning with a cup of coffee made with MCT oil and ghee. I like KetoSource Pure C8 MCT Oil as it contains 99% C8 which is the MCT that is best for brain health.

I blend this with 1 tsp. of organic ghee – my new favourite brand is Na’vi Organics English Grass-Fed Organic Ghee

81ro93OVaQL._SL1500_

  • This nourishing ghee is specially made to order during the spring and summer months from organic certified English butter, produced only from pasture grazing cows in the heart of the west country.
  • Careful slow cooking in the traditional manner, using only the finest organic butter gives its beautiful golden colour, delicate aroma and nutty sweetness.
  • Ghee is one of nature’s most nourishing treasures, a traditional healing food which for centuries has been recognised and highly valued in Ayurvedic medicine. Rich in omega 3 & 9 essential fatty acids and in fat soluble vitamins, A D, E and K.
  • Ghee made from the organic butter of grass fed cows is one of the highest natural sources of CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid), a super-antioxidant.
  • Ghee is one of the most stable cooking oils due to its high flash (smoke) point of 251°C.

If I drink coffee later in the day I drink decaf – the brand I buy is Decadent Decaf Coffee Co. I love this company because they produce decaffeinated whole beans, and use the Swiss Water Method of decaffeinating.

71oy3RyPXGL._SL1500_

This coffee is really delicious and is comparable to the taste of really good caffeinated coffee, whereas most decaf coffee is made from inferior beans and the normal process of decaffeinating coffee is chemically intensive.

If you blend your cup of decaf coffee with a tablespoon of MCT oil you get a hit of clean energy without the jitters that you can get from too much caffeine.

Supplements: I recently started adding gelatin to my tea and drinking it black. This makes it easier for me to cut down on dairy. I’m lactose tolerant and don’t have too many issues with dairy, but definitely don’t think milk agrees with me. I find gelatin takes away the bitterness of black tea and to me it tastes comparable to adding milk.

Gelatin is great for your skin, hair and nails, joint health as well as your gut health so it’s a useful addition. I just add 1 teaspoon to a cup of black tea, and drink maybe 2-3 cups per day.

The brand I buy is Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate, which is completely soluble in hot and cold liquids and is tasteless.

I also take probiotics – my two favourite brands are Elixa Probiotic and Probiogen Daily Digestive Balance.

You can learn more about Elixa here:

Probiogen Daily Digestive Balance contains completely different strains of bacteria compared to Elixa so I find these two probiotics complement each other really well. Everyone’s response to probiotics is different since we all have different gut profiles. It’s good to experiment with different brands to see which ones work for you.

Upcoming Events in the UK – Re-Find Health Nora Gedgaudas

OCTOBER 13, 2018, LONDON

Screen Shot 2018-04-11 at 06.21.19

Nora Gedgaudas is the author of Primal Body, Primal Mind: Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and a Longer Life

51Ptp9YitVL._SX330_BO1,204,203,200_

And more recently: Primal Fat Burner: Going Beyond the Ketogenic Diet to Live Longer, Smarter and Healthier

51JwLzLdaGL._SX325_BO1,204,203,200_

Here’s what Re-Find Health have to say about the event:

“Few would argue that diet plays an important role in the health and function of the human brain and nervous system. But official policies driven by decades of misinformation and disinformation have misled consumers and health advocates/practitioners alike, leading to profound confusion, poor mental/cognitive health outcomes and widespread neurological compromise.

This presentation provides a plethora of new, clear and compelling scientific evidence for an improved functional and foundational basis of brain health that may best support neurological stability, mood, metabolism, neuroplasticity and healthy cognitive function into old age.

There is literally nothing that has a greater impact on the quality of anyone’s life than the quality of one’s brain health. As rates of mental illness, cognitive dysfunction and Alzheimer’s disease skyrocket (and IQ’s plummet), the ever-expanding DSM (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) has brought us no closer to identifying or truly understanding the root causes of brain dysfunction, nor has it brought us any closer to meaningful solutions.

But very real solutions abound if you know where and how to look. In this day-long journey of discovery attendees will learn to connect new dots and meaningfully examine key evidence from humanity’s evolutionary past and human longevity research while taking our uniquely challenging modern world into account to arrive at the optimization of our Primal Mind.”

Podcasts

Screen Shot 2018-04-12 at 05.51.07

Recently I have been really enjoying listening to Dr. Rangan Chatterjee’s new podcast Feel Better Live More. It’s so nice to have a UK based podcast that is looking at health from a functional/ancestral perspective. The podcast is up to episode 13 now so there’s plenty to listen to already.

My other favourite podcast at the moment is Nourish Balance Thrive with Dr. Tommy Wood and Chris Kelly, who are both British as well (although based in the US now and the podcast is a US based one).

I’ve been reading up on the latest thinking on cholesterol recently, for various reasons. Nourish Balance Thrive have several fascinating podcasts on cholesterol – if you are interested start with this one.

Zoe Harcombe also wrote a recent article on cholesterol – she discusses a paper where the researchers found “Raised cholesterol (defined as greater than 5.0 mmol/L) was inversely associated with CVD deaths in most countries. It’s so crazy that people are still continually told they need to go on statins to get their cholesterol below 5!
