I’ve decided to change the name of my monthly blog post series as it has become less about ‘What I Ate in…’ and more of a monthly round up post. So welcome to the first post of the new series: Paleo in the UK in April.
I’ll try and include as much info on seasonal eating, what’s new in paleo in the UK and books, products and events that may be of interest.
What’s in Season in the UK in April?
- New Potatoes
- Morel Mushrooms
- Spring Greens
- Spring Onions
New Potatoes with Garlic and Spring Onions
These baked new potatoes are delicious served alongside some simple grilled fish with a large seasonal green salad.
- 500g new potatoes, halved
- 1 whole bulb of garlic, separated into cloves
- 3 Spring onions, chopped
- Extra virgin olive oil
- 125g tub coconut yogurt
- Handful of chopped fresh herbs (choose from mint, parsley, dill or a mixture)
- Preheat the oven to 180C.
- Place the potatoes in a large roasting tray.
- Keep one of the garlic cloves for the yogurt sauce, scatter the others over the potatoes along with the chopped Spring onions.
- Drizzle everything with olive oil and toss to coat with the oil.
- Place in the preheated oven and cook for 60 minutes until the potatoes are turning golden.
- Meanwhile make the yogurt sauce. Crush the reserved garlic clove and add to the coconut yogurt along with the chopped fresh herbs. Season with a little salt and pepper and stir thoroughly. Place into a serving dish and drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil.
- When the potatoes are cooked, serve with the yogurt sauce alongside.
- 8 stalks rhubarb
- 1 Bramley cooking apple
- 1-2 tbsp. honey
- 100g tiger nut flour or green banana flour
- 50g Medjool dates
- 50g coconut oil
- Optional: handful of flaked almonds
- Preheat the oven to 180C.
- In a food processor blitz the flour with the dates and coconut oil until you have a crumbly mixture. If it seems too dry add a little more coconut oil.
- Peel, core and chop the apple. Chop the rhubarb into 1 inch pieces, discarding the leaves. Place the apple and rhubarb into a pan with a little bit of water to stop it sticking and cook until the fruit softens and starts to break down.
- Place the fruit into the bottom of an ovenproof dish and drizzle over 1-2 tbsp. of honey to sweeten the fruit.
- Top the fruit with the crumble topping. If using, sprinkle over the flaked almonds.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the fruit begins to bubble at the sides and the top is golden.
- Serve with whipped coconut cream.

Eating Out – Paleo-Friendly Restaurants
There is still a lack of easy paleo-friendly places to eat in the UK. If you live or work in London you have more choice than most. I recently came across Pod which is available to order through Deliveroo and UberEats.
Pod have a really nice selection of eggs for breakfast (skip the toast) and a good selection of salad bowls for lunch.

My Favourite Paleo Products
I start every morning with a cup of coffee made with MCT oil and ghee. I like KetoSource Pure C8 MCT Oil as it contains 99% C8 which is the MCT that is best for brain health.
I blend this with 1 tsp. of organic ghee – my new favourite brand is Na’vi Organics English Grass-Fed Organic Ghee.
- This nourishing ghee is specially made to order during the spring and summer months from organic certified English butter, produced only from pasture grazing cows in the heart of the west country.
- Careful slow cooking in the traditional manner, using only the finest organic butter gives its beautiful golden colour, delicate aroma and nutty sweetness.
- Ghee is one of nature’s most nourishing treasures, a traditional healing food which for centuries has been recognised and highly valued in Ayurvedic medicine. Rich in omega 3 & 9 essential fatty acids and in fat soluble vitamins, A D, E and K.

If I drink coffee later in the day I drink decaf – the brand I buy is Decadent Decaf Coffee Co. I love this company because they produce decaffeinated whole beans, and use the Swiss Water Method of decaffeinating.
This coffee is really delicious and is comparable to the taste of really good caffeinated coffee, whereas most decaf coffee is made from inferior beans and the normal process of decaffeinating coffee is chemically intensive.
If you blend your cup of decaf coffee with a tablespoon of MCT oil you get a hit of clean energy without the jitters that you can get from too much caffeine.
Supplements: I recently started adding gelatin to my tea and drinking it black. This makes it easier for me to cut down on dairy. I’m lactose tolerant and don’t have too many issues with dairy, but definitely don’t think milk agrees with me. I find gelatin takes away the bitterness of black tea and to me it tastes comparable to adding milk.
Gelatin is great for your skin, hair and nails, joint health as well as your gut health so it’s a useful addition. I just add 1 teaspoon to a cup of black tea, and drink maybe 2-3 cups per day.
The brand I buy is Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate, which is completely soluble in hot and cold liquids and is tasteless.

Probiogen Daily Digestive Balance contains completely different strains of bacteria compared to Elixa so I find these two probiotics complement each other really well. Everyone’s response to probiotics is different since we all have different gut profiles. It’s good to experiment with different brands to see which ones work for you.

Recently I have been really enjoying listening to Dr. Rangan Chatterjee’s new podcast Feel Better Live More. It’s so nice to have a UK based podcast that is looking at health from a functional/ancestral perspective. The podcast is up to episode 13 now so there’s plenty to listen to already.
My other favourite podcast at the moment is Nourish Balance Thrive with Dr. Tommy Wood and Chris Kelly, who are both British as well (although based in the US now and the podcast is a US based one).
I’ve been reading up on the latest thinking on cholesterol recently, for various reasons. Nourish Balance Thrive have several fascinating podcasts on cholesterol – if you are interested start with this one.
Zoe Harcombe also wrote a recent article on cholesterol – she discusses a paper where the researchers found “Raised cholesterol (defined as greater than 5.0 mmol/L) was inversely associated with CVD deaths in most countries. It’s so crazy that people are still continually told they need to go on statins to get their cholesterol below 5!
